Stupid wrong fuel mistake in Limerick? You are in good company

Short answer

It felt stupid the moment you did it, and every driver in Limerick who has stood at that pump felt exactly the same. The feeling is normal. The next thirty seconds are what matter. Do not start the engine. Phone 01295 380724 and one of our engine scientists, fuel-system engineers and misfuel specialists will tell you exactly where you stand, free of charge.

You are in Limerick, Ireland, so we take the consultation and put you straight through to a local drainer covering County Limerick.

Why a stupid wrong fuel mistake happens to careful drivers too

Around 150,000 UK drivers put the wrong fuel in every year — roughly one every three and a half minutes. The foundational academic study of fuelling errors concluded it is a mistake designed into the forecourt, not into the driver: nozzle geometry, adjacent filler necks and a distracted minute do most of the work.

The study that established how common this is traced the cause to the forecourt, not the driver: a nozzle that drops freely into the wrong filler neck, two fuels a glance apart, and a moment of divided attention. In Limerick, as everywhere, it is a design problem wearing the costume of a personal failing.

Figure 02 — The one instruction

The next five minutes

  1. Do not start the engine. The urge to start it "just to be sure" is the exact urge to resist. Off means safe; on means the clock starts.
  2. If you have already started it, switch off. Kill the ignition and leave it. A tow to a garage beats driving to one every time.
  3. Tell the forecourt staff and apply the handbrake. Draining on the forecourt is routine, and they have seen it before today.
  4. Phone 01295 380724. Say what went in, roughly how much, what the vehicle is, and whether the engine has run. That is enough.

How bad is it? Answer one question

Wrong fuel behaves differently depending on one thing only: how far through the fuel system it has travelled.

Limerick: the practical bit

Limerick sits in County Limerick, and a unit attends the whole of it. Nearer Newcastle West, Abbeyfeale, Rathkeale? The same applies — the vehicle is not moved, the technician travels. The pickup point is wherever the car already is, including a forecourt or a driveway.

Ireland — how this works

Limerick is in the Republic of Ireland, and our own drainage units are UK-based. What we do here is put you straight through to a local drainer covering County Limerick, so you are not ringing round a search page while the vehicle sits on a forecourt.

The consultation is the same and it is still free. Tell us what went in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has run, and one of our engine scientists, fuel-system engineers and misfuel specialists will establish what is exposed before anyone is dispatched. The mechanism does not change at the Irish Sea: a high-pressure pump fails on petrol in Cork exactly as it does in Cardiff.

The three things that make it expensive

Published UK figures put a straightforward drain at around £120 and the worst cases — a vehicle driven until it stopped — into five figures. The gap between those two numbers is entirely explained by how far the car was driven after the mistake, which is why the instruction is always the same: stop.

Published UK cost ranges by exposure. Repository data, not a price list — the consultation itself is free.

4.8 out of 5 ★★★★★

Fuel Fixer, the company behind UK Wrong Fuel Repository, holds a rating of 4.8 out of 5 from 2,190 reviews on Trustpilot, on a profile claimed since 2017.

Across recent reviews, the themes customers raise most often are staff who stay polite, professional and reassuring during what is a stressful situation, and how quickly a technician arrives and gets the vehicle back on the road in Limerick.

The most common criticism is price. Some customers have felt the cost of an emergency drain was steep for a job that takes under two hours, and that is fair comment on an emergency call-out. It is why the misfuel call-out fee is free and why published repair figures span two orders of magnitude before a technician sets off — so nothing about the cost is a surprise at the roadside.

Everything else worth knowing

Can I just top up with the correct fuel instead of draining?

Topping up feels like it should help and does not. The wrong fuel is still there, now mixed through a larger volume, and every litre of it still reaches the pump. Drain first, refuel after.

How long can the wrong fuel sit in the tank before it does harm?

As long as you like, within reason, provided you do not start it. Static fuel in a tank harms nothing; it is circulation that causes wear. Water contamination is the exception, as standing water corrodes.

Will my insurance cover it?

Check the schedule, because the answer varies. Many comprehensive policies exclude it, some offer it as an optional extra, and a smaller number include it. Where it is covered, it is usually the drain, not the repair.

Is it safe to drive to a garage if it is close?

No. "Close" is still driving, and driving is the one thing that moves the contamination through the pump and injectors. A mobile drain removes the entire reason to risk it: the vehicle is not moved at all.

What is the difference between a drain and a flush?

Draining removes what pours out; flushing removes what clings on. Skip the flush and the residue left in the lines mixes straight back into the clean fuel. Both are part of the same visit.

The bottom line for Limerick

The data is unusually reassuring for a subject this feared. A median of 1.5 miles driven, nine in ten under ten miles, and a standard drain in the low hundreds of pounds. Misfuelling is common, survivable and cheap to fix — provided the response is to stop, not to push on.

Common questions

Can I drive with wrong fuel?

No. Starting or driving pumps it through the system and can turn a straightforward drain into an expensive repair. Leave the vehicle where it is and call 01295 380724.

How long does the drain take?

About 45 to 90 minutes on site once the technician arrives. Vehicles that were started or driven take longer, because the lines and filter need flushing as well as the tank.

How much does it cost in Limerick?

Published UK figures run from about £120 to £1,500 depending on the vehicle, how much wrong fuel is in the tank and whether the engine was started. Talking through which end of that range applies to you costs nothing — that consultation is what this repository offers.

Will it have damaged the engine?

Only if it has been run through the system. Caught before starting, it sits in the tank and a drain removes it cleanly.

Does insurance cover it?

Often not. Most car insurance policies exclude misfuelling as standard, though some breakdown policies and optional add-ons include it. Check your own wording.

Do you cover Limerick?

Yes. Mobile technicians attend forecourts, roadsides, homes and workplaces across Limerick, 24 hours a day.
