If you have put the wrong fuel in, do not start the engine. Phone 01295 380724 and one of our engine scientists, fuel-system engineers and misfuel specialists will talk it through with you free of charge — what went in, how much, what the vehicle is, and whether the engine has run. That is enough to establish which components are exposed and what actually happens next.
The consultation is what UK Wrong Fuel Repository offers, and it costs nothing. There is no obligation attached to it, and if you need nobody to attend they will tell you so.
Wrong fuel behaves differently depending on one thing only: how far through the fuel system it has travelled.
Figure 02 — Escalation
Wrong fuel: where it is, and where it goes next
TankThe wrong fuel is sitting still. Nothing downstream has touched it.
Lift pumpTurning the key runs the in-tank pump, and the contamination starts moving.
FilterThe filter takes the first hit and is replaced either way.
High-pressure pumpLubrication fails here first. This is the component that turns a drain into a rebuild.
Injectors and railDebris from the pump arrives here. At this point the fuel system is replaced, not cleaned.
Figure 03 — Mechanism
What wrong fuel does to an engine
Wrong fuel damages the fuel system, and it does it in a fixed order. Petrol in a diesel strips the lubricating film the high-pressure pump and the injectors depend on; those parts run at up to 2,000 bar with nothing but the fuel to keep them apart. Diesel in a petrol engine will not ignite on a spark, so it fouls the plugs, smokes and can load the catalytic converter. Neither of those things has happened yet while the fuel is sitting in the tank.
What wrong fuel reaches, in the order it reaches it, once the engine runs.
Stage
What happens
Recoverable?
Key off, fuel in the tank
Nothing is moving. The contamination is confined to the tank and the pickup.
Yes — drain and flush
Ignition on, lift pump runs
The in-tank pump pushes contaminated fuel into the feed line and the filter.
Usually — drain, flush, new filter
Engine idling
The high-pressure pump takes fuel at up to 2,000 bar and is lubricated only by that fuel.
Often, if stopped quickly
Driven
Lubrication fails, pump internals wear, and fine metal debris enters the common rail.
Sometimes — pump and injectors assessed
Driven until power loss or cut-out
Debris has reached the injectors, and the return line has recontaminated the tank.
Fuel system replaced, not cleaned
This sequence is why every page here says the same thing first: do not turn the key. It is also why published repair figures span two orders of magnitude — the whole range is a consequence of how far down this table a vehicle got. Establishing where yours sits costs nothing: call 01295 380724.
Free consultation — £0
What this repository offers is a consultation, and it costs nothing. Phone 01295 380724 and you will speak to one of our engine scientists, fuel-system engineers and misfuel specialists — people who work on contaminated fuel systems for a living and would be glad to help.
Tell them what went into the tank, roughly how much, what the vehicle is, and whether the engine has run. They will work out the concentration with you, tell you which components are exposed, and set out the realistic outcomes.
There is nothing to buy and no obligation of any kind. If the honest answer is that you need nobody at all, that is the answer you will be given — and roughly a third of callers are in exactly that position.
Published UK cost ranges by exposure. Repository data, not a price list — the consultation itself is free.

Ranges are what UK providers and consumer bodies have published, cited on the relevant repository pages. They are here because knowing them changes what you do in the next ten minutes — not as a quotation. Talking to one of our specialists costs nothing.
Fuel Fixer, the company behind UK Wrong Fuel Repository, holds a rating of 4.8 out of 5 from 2,190 reviews on Trustpilot, on a profile claimed since 2017.
Across recent reviews, the themes customers raise most often are staff who stay polite, professional and reassuring during what is a stressful situation, and how quickly a technician arrives and gets the vehicle back on the road.
The most common criticism is price. Some customers have felt the cost of an emergency drain was steep for a job that takes under two hours, and that is fair comment on an emergency call-out. It is why the misfuel call-out fee is free and why published repair figures span two orders of magnitude before a technician sets off — so nothing about the cost is a surprise at the roadside.
Common questions
Can I drive with wrong fuel?
No. Starting or driving pumps it through the system and can turn a straightforward drain into an expensive repair. Leave the vehicle where it is and call 01295 380724.
How long does the drain take?
About 45 to 90 minutes on site once the technician arrives. Vehicles that were started or driven take longer, because the lines and filter need flushing as well as the tank.
How much does it cost in the UK?
Published UK figures run from about £120 to £1,500 depending on the vehicle, how much wrong fuel is in the tank and whether the engine was started. Talking through which end of that range applies to you costs nothing — that consultation is what this repository offers.
Will it have damaged the engine?
Only if it has been run through the system. Caught before starting, it sits in the tank and a drain removes it cleanly.
Does insurance cover it?
Often not. Most car insurance policies exclude misfuelling as standard, though some breakdown policies and optional add-ons include it. Check your own wording.
Do you cover the UK?
Yes. Mobile technicians attend forecourts, roadsides, homes and workplaces across the UK, 24 hours a day.
Once the fuel is drained and you are moving again, Motor Servicing will service the car on your driveway rather than making you find a garage.
While the wrong fuel sits in the tank it has reached nothing: not the filter, not the pump, not the injectors.
Across 57,047 recorded UK cases, whether the engine ran is the variable that decides everything that follows.
