Wrong fuel in a Nissan Navara: the numbers
A Nissan Navara carries a tank of roughly 80 litres, so a typical 20-litre misfuel is about 25 per cent concentration. Do not start the engine: at that ratio it is a drain, not something dilution will fix.
Consultation with one of our engine scientists, fuel-system engineers and misfuel specialists is free. Tell them the model and the volume and they will do this arithmetic with you.

Wrong fuel in a Nissan Navara: why the tank size decides it
Volume on its own tells you very little. Ten litres is 20 per cent of a 50-litre car and 12 per cent of an 80-litre van, and what the high-pressure pump experiences is the ratio, not the quantity. On a Nissan Navara at 80 litres, that arithmetic is the first thing worth doing.
| Litres | Concentration | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1.3% | A trace. |
| 5 | 6.3% | Past the point where topping up helps. |
| 10 | 12.5% | A drain, not a dilution. |
| 20 | 25% | A drain, not a dilution. |
| 30 | 37.5% | Effectively a tankful of the wrong fuel. |
Figure 02 — Escalation
- TankThe wrong fuel is sitting still. Nothing downstream has touched it.
- Lift pumpTurning the key runs the in-tank pump, and the contamination starts moving.
- FilterThe filter takes the first hit and is replaced either way.
- High-pressure pumpLubrication fails here first. This is the component that turns a drain into a rebuild.
- Injectors and railDebris from the pump arrives here. At this point the fuel system is replaced, not cleaned.
How bad is it? Answer one question
Wrong fuel in a nissan navara behaves differently depending on one thing only: how far through the fuel system it has travelled.
What to do right now
- Do not turn the key or start the engine — that is what turns a drain into a repair.
- Do not move the vehicle. On a forecourt, apply the handbrake and tell the station staff.
- Call 01295 380724 for a free consultation. Give your location, the vehicle and which fuels were mixed.
- A technician attends with a licensed drainage unit and makes the area safe.
- The contaminated fuel is pumped out and the fuel lines are flushed through.
- Clean fuel goes in, the vehicle is started and checked, and you drive away. The waste fuel leaves with us for compliant disposal.
| Exposure | What has been reached | Published range | Source grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine never started | Tank and pickup only | £120–£299 | operational dataset, secondary |
| Started, not driven | Lift pump, feed line, filter | £150–£299 | operational dataset |
| Driven a short distance | High-pressure pump under load | £1,000–£3,000 if the pump is replaced | operational dataset |
| Driven until power loss | Injectors and common rail | £3,000–£8,000 | operational dataset |
| Most severe recorded cases | Whole fuel system, tank included | £5,000–£15,000+ | operational dataset |
Ranges are what UK providers and consumer bodies have published, cited on the relevant repository pages. They are here because knowing them changes what you do in the next ten minutes — not as a quotation. Talking to one of our specialists costs nothing.
