Diesel coats the spark plugs and cylinder walls, so the engine misfires, floods the exhaust with white smoke and often cuts out. It fouls the plugs, can poison the lambda sensors and eventually loads the catalytic converter.

The signs
Heavy white exhaust smoke, a rough misfire, hesitation on the throttle and often a refusal to start at all. Fouled plugs are the usual finding.
